The Gatorade State Girls Soccer Players of the Year were selected based on athletic production and impact in the 2015-16 season. Each winner also demonstrated high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership.

THE WINNER: Malia Lyken
School: Dimond (Anchorage, Alaska)
Athletic achievement: She had led the Lynx to a 12-0 record at the time of her selection. Lyken scored 19 goals and passed for 18 assists through 12 games. A First Team All-Cook Inlet Conference selection and a member of the All-State Tournament Team as a sophomore, she attended camp with the U.S. Under-19 Women’s National Team this past fall.
Academic excellence: Lyken has maintained a B average.
Exemplary character: She has volunteered locally on behalf of the American Red Cross, Planned Parenthood and youth sports programs.
“Lyken is a really hard worker and a phenomenal athlete,” said Jo Reid, head coach at East Anchorage High. “She’s got the speed and tenacity to get to the goal, and she’s definitely the main player in their attack.”
THE FUTURE: Lyken has signed a National Letter of Intent to play soccer on scholarship at Northern Arizona University this fall.
