The Gatorade State Girls Cross Country Runners of the Year were selected based on athletic production and impact in the 2015-16 season. Each winner also demonstrated high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership.

THE WINNER: Allie Schadler

THE BASICS

School: Rio Rico (Ariz.)
Grade: Junior
Position: Distance Runner
Height: 5-foot-5

Athletic achievement: The distance runner raced to the Division 3 individual state championship this past season with a course-record time of 17:04.5, leading the Hawks to third place as a team. Schadler also won the Section 3 championship, the Four Corners Invitational and the Div. 4 race at the Mt. SAC Invitational.

Academic excellence: Schadler has maintained a weighted 4.50 GPA.

Exemplary character: A devoted member of her church community, she has volunteered locally on behalf of youth sports programs.

THE PRAISE

“Schadler is highly dedicated and highly focused,” said Jeff Messer, head coach at Desert Vista High. “As a competitor she’s very determined, even ferocious, but she’s also quiet and extremely humble.”

THE FUTURE: Schadler will begin her senior year of high school this fall.
