The Gatorade State Boys Cross Country Runners of the Year were selected based on athletic production and impact in the 2015-16 season. Each winner also demonstrated high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership.

THE WINNER: Ryan Schweizer
School: Dowling Catholic (West Des Moines, Iowa)
Position: Distance Runner
Weight: 160 pounds
Athletic achievement: He won the Class 4A state meet this past season with a time of 15:45.3 to lead the Maroons to the state title. Schweizer was undefeated against in-state competition and placed 25th at the Nike Cross Nationals Heartland Regional championships.
Academic excellence: Schweizer has maintained a 3.78 GPA.
Exemplary character: He has volunteered locally as a youth camp counselor and swim instructor, and he has donated his time to the Best Buddies program.
“In my many years of coaching, Ryan has some of the best pure speed that I have ever seen from a distance runner,” said Tom Trygstad, head coach of Valley High. “His ability to close and finish strong can strike fear in all competitors.”
THE FUTURE: Schweizer remains undecided upon a collegiate destination.
