The Gatorade State Girls Track & Field Athletes of the Year were selected based on athletic production and impact in the 2015-16 season. Each winner also demonstrated high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership.

THE WINNER: Janie O’Connor
School: Zachary (La.)
Athletic achievement: She won three individual events and anchored a winning relay quartet at the Class 5A state meet this past season, leading the Broncos to the state championship as a team. O’Connor won the 100-meter dash in 11.69 seconds, captured the 200-meter dash in 23.82 and broke the tape in the 400-meter dash in a state-record 53.73. She also ran a leg on for the state title winning 4×200 relay squad.
Academic excellence: O’Connor has maintained a B average.
Exemplary character: She has volunteered locally on behalf of the Special Olympics, youth track programs and community clean-up initiatives.
“Janie is the difference maker,” said Zachary coach Chris Carrier. “She has five school records herself, and she’s been on five school record-holding relays. She makes everybody on our team better and she does everything that is asked of her.”
THE FUTURE: O’Connor will begin her senior year of high school this fall.
