The Gatorade State Girls Cross Country Runners of the Year were selected based on athletic production and impact in the 2015-16 season. Each winner also demonstrated high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership.

THE WINNER: Taylor Somers
School: Millard South (Omaha, Neb.)
Position: Distance Runner
Athletic achievement: The distance runner raced the Class A individual state championship this past season with a time of 18:34.9. A three-time First Team All-State selection, Somers was the fastest Nebraska competitor at the Foot Locker Midwest Regional championships, crossing the line 26th in 18:30. She also finished 32nd at the Nike Cross Nationals Heartland Regional championships in 18:29.6.
Academic excellence: Somers has maintained a 4.06 GPA.
Exemplary character: A member of her school’s leadership council, she has volunteered locally on behalf of the Open Door Mission and as a youth track & field coach.
“Taylor Somers had an incredible season,” said Colin Johnston, head coach at Millard West High.” She was never really pushed because she is head and shoulders above everyone else. Not only is she a great competitor and runner, but she is also very humble and supportive of other teams and athletes.”
THE FUTURE: Somers will begin her senior year of high school this fall.
