The Gatorade State Boys Track & Field Athletes of the Year were selected based on athletic production and impact in the 2015-16 season. Each winner also demonstrated high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership.

THE WINNER: Jordan Geist
School: Knoch (Saxonburg, Pa.)
Weight: 248 pounds
Athletic achievement: He hurled the shot put 74 feet, 3.5 inches at the Class AAA state meet this past season to shatter the state record. Geist also won the discus with a throw of 183 feet, and his season-best effort of 74-4.5 in the shot put ranked as the nation’s No. 1 performance among prep competitors in 2016 at the time of his selection. It also placed him sixth in U.S. high school history. He won silver in the shot put at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor (73-2.75).
Academic excellence: Geist has maintained a 3.59 GPA.
Exemplary character: He has volunteered locally as a Sunday school teacher and as a youth track instructor.
“Jordan does all the little things necessary to be successful,” said Knoch coach Wes Brahler. “He’s in the weight room year-round, he’s constantly working on technique. He doesn’t leave anything to chance.”
THE FUTURE: Geist will begin his senior year of high school this fall.
