The Gatorade State Boys Track & Field Athletes of the Year were selected based on athletic production and impact in the 2015-16 season. Each winner also demonstrated high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership.

THE WINNER: Casey Clinger
School: American Fork (Utah)
Weight: 140 pounds
Athletic achievement: He captured two individual titles at the Class 5A state meet this past outdoor season, leading the Cavemen to a third-place finish as a team. Also the Gatorade Utah Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year, Clinger broke the tape in the 1,600-meter run and the 3,200-meter run, and took silver in the 800-meter run. He set a state record in the 3,200 with a time of 8:50.70, which ranked as the nation’s No. 9 time in 2016 among prep competitors at the time of his selection. He also produced national rankings in the 2-mile run (No. 3), the 1,600 (No. 16) and the 800 (No. 99).
Academic excellence: Clinger has maintained a 4.0 GPA.
Exemplary character: An Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America as well as a talented musician, he has volunteered locally on behalf of the Utah State Development Center, which assists people with intellectual disabilities.
“Casey is an incredibly hard worker on the track,” said Timo Mostert, head coach of American Fork High. “He had a terrific season.”
THE FUTURE: Clinger will begin his senior year of high school this fall.
