The Gatorade State Boys Track & Field Athletes of the Year were selected based on athletic production and impact in the 2015-16 season. Each winner also demonstrated high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership.

THE WINNER: Tyler Marshall
School: CVU (Hinesburg, Vt.)
Weight: 155 pounds
Athletic achievement: He won three individual titles at the Division I state meet this past season, leading the Redhawks to a state championship as a team. Marshall won the 800-meter run, the 1,500-meter run and the 3,000-meter run at the state meet. His season-best time in the 3,000 (8:51.77) ranked as the nation’s No. 83 time in 2016 among prep competitors at the time of his selection, while his 4:04.30 clocking in the 1,500 ranked No. 97.
Academic excellence: Marshall has maintained a 3.37 GPA.
Exemplary character: He has volunteered locally at numerous road races and as a youth track coach.
“Tyler Marshall was the man in Vermont distance running this spring,” said Joe Gonillo, head coach of Essex High. “He excelled in all distance events, showing off his talent, strength, diversity and unselfishness to his team.”
THE FUTURE: Marshall will begin his senior year of high school this fall.
