The Gatorade State Girls Cross Country Runners of the Year were selected based on athletic production and impact in the 2015-16 season. Each winner also demonstrated high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership.

THE WINNER: Sophia Gorman
School: Champlain Valley Union (Hinesburg, Vt.)
Position: Distance Runner
Athletic achievement: The distance runner raced to the Division 1 state championship this past season in 19:30, leading the Redhawks to the state title as a team. Gorman finished eighth at the New England Championships in 19:23.9 and took 13th at the Nike Cross Nationals Northeast Regional championships.
Academic excellence: Gorman has maintained a 3.69 GPA.
Exemplary character: She has volunteered locally on behalf of Meals on Wheels and the Salvation Army.
“Sophia improved as a runner dramatically this year,” said Champlain Valley coach Scott Bliss. “She’s developed into one of the best runners I’ve ever coached, and her leadership was one of the main reasons for our success as a team this year.”
THE FUTURE: Gorman will begin her senior year of high school this fall.
