Here’s to hoping the weather cooperates for high school girls golfers this season.
Last year, the two-day Class 5A state tournament was cut in half when the second day was cancelled due to inclement weather, shortchanging those who qualified from a chance to make a true run at a title.
There are four girls golf teams in the area, with Fossil Ridge and Poudre in 5A, Windsor in 4A and Resurrection Christian in 3A.
Fossil Ridge is paired with Fort Collins, and Poudre is paired with Rocky Mountain to form the city teams.
Here’s a season outlook for each squad.
The SaberCats finished second in the Front Range League last season and should have a chance to compete for league and regional titles this season.
Paige Gentry was Fossil Ridge’s top finisher at last season’s abbreviated state tournament, and she’s back for her senior year. Cammie Fowler and Kayla Elder also return after making state. Abbey Cosper, a senior, and Leigha Devine, a freshman, will also play key roles in the success of the team.
The Impalas have a solid group of returning players who know the landscape of the high school level and can help lead younger players as Poudre tries to improve on a seventh-place finish in the Front Range League.
Emily Blomberg, Payton Fisher and Denise Russo all competed at regionals last year. Other key players are junior Mikalynne Dyer and freshman Lauren Axe.
The Wizards took fourth in the Tri-Valley Conference last year. Jayden Muro and Bria Duvall both earned all-conference honors as freshmen, and Muro made an appearance at the state tournament.
Other key golfers to watch for are Jessica Zapf, Madison Montgomery, Kinsey Smith and Lauren Gustafson.
Entering Resurrection’s fourth season, Eric Heinz is taking over as coach.
Caitlin Hart has regional experience, and Alexis Stratton will be another strong performer. The Cougars, who had just five players last season, now have numbers in the double digits as the program grows.
