Coaches like control, and a volleyball setter provides that on a court.
So when a coach finds a setter they can trust such as Honeoye Falls-Lima senior Molly Taylor, there is no need to look for a backup.
“Molly is a very good athlete,” HF-L coach Rene Monks said. “Ever since she was on JV, she’s been very coachable and one of the hardest workers on the court. She’s actually filling some really big shoes.”
Audrey Goldfarb was named to two Democrat and Chronicle All-Greater Rochester Girls Volleyball Teams, near the start of HF-L’s string of Section V championships. Taylor helped the Cougars win a fourth title in as many years, with a three-set win over Wayne in last week’s Class B final.
“That was nice to end my senior year with that,” Taylor said.
The Cougars are not quite finished, however. Next is the Far West Regional round Saturday. HF-L (18-1) takes on Cazenovia, a team in Section III (Syracuse), 5 p.m. at Le Roy. The only loss HF-L suffered this season was to Section V Class A champion Pittsford Sutherland, a team the Cougars defeated near the end of the regular season.
“As a setter, I’m really the captain on the court, and a captain off the court as well,” Taylor said. “So I really encourage my teammates and keep them all focused and try to bring out the best in every player on the court.
“I have to look for matchups (to exploit) on the other side of the court, how tall and skilled their blockers are, so I know who to set on the court, as well as know where their setter is, so we can block or tip or whatever we have to do. It’s pretty fast (action).”
School/year: Honeoye Falls-Lima/senior.
Sport/position: Volleyball/setter. She also plays with the Livingston Area Volleyball Association club program based at Caledonia-Mumford.
Big numbers: 3.94 GPA on a scale of 4.0. She is undecided on where to attend college, but is interested in psychology.
People would be surprised to know that: “I actually do a lot of community service outside of volleyball and I’m very family-orientated. My sister Kelly is on the team. She was pulled for sectionals, and she is a setter just like me.
“I’m a senior in Girls Scouts, and I’ve been working on my Gold Award, where I planted a garden in Harry Allan Park in Honeoye Falls. It’s in memory of the starter of the One Room Schoolhouse program.”
