Penfield and Bre McGrath, right, host No. 1 Fairport at 6:30 p.m. Friday in a matchup of teams ranked in the D&C Large-School Girls Soccer Coaches’ Poll. Fairport is No. 1; the Patriots are No. 7.

Top-ranked Fairport showed a crack in its armor on Saturday, playing to a 0-0 tie at Brighton and on Friday night the Red Raiders (9-0-1) play at Monroe County east-side rival Penfield, which is only 5-3-3 and ranked seventh but is a couple plays of having a much better record and being ranked higher. That won’t be an easy task to stay unbeaten.

It’s one of two matchups on Friday featuring ranked teams in the Democrat and Chronicle‘s large-school girls soccer poll. The other pits No. 6 Pittsford Sutherland (7-2-1) at No. 5 Brockport (8-2). That’s a 6 p.m. kick-off. The Fairport-Penfield match is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Nine of Penfield’s 11 matches have either finished in a tie (3) or has been a one-goal win (4) or one-goal loss (2). So if the Patriots start finding ways to turn those ties into wins, watch out. They lost 3-0 to Fairport in their first matchup, giving up a pair of goals early in the second half to turn a close match into a rout.

Spencerport girls are road warriors, off to 6-0-1 start

Sutherland has been anchored by defense. It has allowed only five goals in 10 matches and shut out seven foes behind senior keeper Mara Smith. The Knights have blanked five of their last six foes with the only goal coming in a 1-1 draw against No. 9 Aquinas.
