Each week leading up to the MHSAA Semifinals and Finals, the Enquirer will count down the top five players from the city volleyball programs, revealing the ‘Greatest of All Time’ (G.O.A.T.) each Friday. Then fans will have an opportunity to vote for who they think is the G.O.A.T. at each school.
3. Christina Donnell – Class of 1980
Christina Donnell, Ph.D., helped put Pennfield volleyball on the map. A 5-foot-5 setter, she was a three-time All-City selection – the first player to accomplish the feat. As a junior, she helped Pennfield win the 1979 Class B state championship with a sweep of Saginaw Eisenhower at Grand Rapids Junior College. As a senior, she was the catalyst on a Panthers team that finished runner-up in Class C, concluding her four-year high school career with a 131-20 record. She signed with the University of Alabama, and played for the Crimson Tide until the school opted to terminate the program following her sophomore season. Donnell then moved on to the University of Minnesota along with AVCA Hall of Fame coach Stephanie Schleuder. As a senior in 1983, she was a team co-captain and MVP, finishing with 909 assists while earning Academic All-Big Ten Conference and GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-America honors.
What the panel said: “Team leader and talented passer who could also jump out of the gym.”
