Each week leading up to the MHSAA Semifinals and Finals, the Enquirer will count down the top five players from the city volleyball programs, revealing the ‘Greatest of All Time’ (G.O.A.T.) each Friday. Then fans will have an opportunity to vote for who they think is the G.O.A.T. at each school.
2. Mary Kay (Jenkins) Pessetti – Class of 1983
Mary Kay (nee Jenkins) Pessetti is one of the most successful athletes ever to come through Pennfield High School. She was a key member of the Panthers’ 1980 Class C state championship basketball team as a sophomore, while also helping the volleyball team claim the 1981 Class C state title in the same school year. A 5-foot-3 setter, she was also a member of Pennfield’s Class C state runner-up volleyball teams in 1980 and 1982. A three-time All-City and All-State selection, she signed to play at the University of Wisconsin – then coached by Russ Carney, who led Kellogg Community College to the 1980 NJCAA National Championship – and played one season for the Badgers.
What the panel said: “Quick and dependable, she made a big impact on some of the state’s best teams.”
