Each week leading up to the MHSAA Semifinals and Finals, the Enquirer will count down the top five players from the city volleyball programs, revealing the ‘Greatest of All Time’ (G.O.A.T.) each Friday. Then fans will have an opportunity to vote for who they think is the G.O.A.T. at each school.
4. Becky (Neglia) Lee – Class of 1995
With Becky (nee Neglia) Lee leading the way, the 1995 Pennfield volleyball team might have been the most talented group to come through the program since the Panthers’ 1981 state championship team. Ranked No. 1 in Class B for much of the season, Pennfield finished the year 61-3-2 overall with city and Kalamazo Valley Association championships. The 6-foot middle hitter was dominant at the net, recording a team-best 735 kills and 233 blocks on her way to her second straight All-State honor and selection to the Detroit News ‘Dream Team.’ She continued her player career at Kent State, where she was a two-time All-Mid-American Conference selection. At the time of her graduation, she was the Golden Flashes’ all-time career leader in kills (1,533) and still ranks second in career blocks (433). She was inducted into the Kent State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009.
What the pannel said: “Punished the ball with autority and demorilized opponents with her blocking ability.”
