Greenbrier dismantles Whites Creek

GREENBRIER — The Greenbrier and Whites Creek defenses took center stage Friday as the Bobcats took a 9-8 lead into halftime by cashing in on a safety.

After the break, the Greenbrier offense erupted, scoring 28 points in the third quarter and 15 in the fourth to gain a 52-28 victory over the Cobras.

For Greenbrier coach John Elmore, his team’s performance was a source of pride.

“I thought our defense did a great job tonight, and offensively I liked our second half effort, but now we have to get back to work,” Elmore said.

Here’s five takeaways from Greenbrier’s victory.

1 – A strong third quarter put Greenbrier over the top. The Bobcats scored four different ways in the third quarter. They had a passing touchdown, a rushing touchdown, a blocked punt for a touchdown and an interception that was returned for a touchdown.

2 – Greenbrier defensive backs led the way Friday night. They had three interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown in the win.

3 – Greenbrier sophomore Micah Escue did a little bit of everything. He rushed for 79 yards on eight carries with a touchdown, caught three passes for 54 yards with another touchdown, intercepted a pass for a touchdown and returned two kicks for 56 yards.

4 – The Bobcat offensive line controlled play all night. They opened holes, allowing three different rushers, Bailey Young, Cole Matherly and Escue, to gain at least 79 yards.

5 – Greenbrier is on a three-game winning streak. The Bobcats may be on a roll, but if they hope to make the playoffs, they have to win every game from here on out. That starts Thursday when Greenbrier will be traveling to Christ Presbyterian Academy. Game time is 7 p.m.
