The Palm Desert girls (89-38) and Xavier Prep boys (93-34) each won Desert Valley League dual track and field meets on Thursday afternoon.
Haliey Murdica was one of four Aztecs on the girls’ squad who won two events, including lowering her own school record in the 100 meters to 12.26 seconds. She also won the 200 in 25.90. Riley Arson (1600 in 6:03 and 800 in 2:44), Kira Leggat (300 hurdles in 51.75 and 100 hurdles in 17.28) and Melissa Brown (high jump in 4-08 and triple jump in 32-11.5) also won twice.
For the Xavier Prep girls, Cassidy Hill was the highlight, setting a school record in the shot put with a throw of 32-11.75 to win, Heather Gilliland (400), Nicky Johnson (3200) and Romina Caipo (discus) also picked up wins.
Caesar Lopez and Jah Strange led the Xavier Prep boys to a win with two victories each. Strange took the high jump (5-10) and the long jump (20-06), while Lopez won the discus (135-06) and the shot put (43-11).
Marcella Daniel Gonzalez picked up two wins for the Aztecs’ boys team in the 1600 (4:46) and the 800 (2:06.42).
La Quinta vs. Indio: The boys and girls defending DVL track and field champs both picked up another key victory Thursday night against Indio, with the boys winning 85-42 and the girls coming away victorious 106-21.
Koty Burton led the La Quinta boys with three wins in the 400 (49.77), 110 hurdles (14.00) and the 300 hurdles (41.06). Nick Harris won twice in the 100 (11.36) and the 200 (22.88), and Casey Cruz won the 1600 (4:24.31) and the 800 (1:59.24).
Skyla Curtis led the Blackhawk girls with three wins in the 400 (1:02.91), the 100 hurdles (16.96) and the 300 hurdles (48.39).
For Indio, Andres Mejia led the boys with a win in the 3200 (10:22), while Brian Cervantes won the triple jump (38-11). For the girls, Victoria Williams won the 100 (12.74), and Jocelyn Gutierrez won the triple jump (30-4).
Cathedral City vs. Coachella Valley: The Cathedral City boys and Coachella Valley girls track teams picked up dual meet wins. Jovan Ramos was the bright spot for the Arabs’ boys squad, winning both the long jump and the triple jump.
For the Coachella Valley girls, Danni DeMara won the 100 and 300 hurdles, while Johanna Franco won the high jump, Jenny Salido won the 1600 and the 800 and Fabi Corral won the 400.
La Quinta 8, Colton 0: Evan Berkey pitched a complete game shutout for Thursday’s win, striking out seven batters and only giving up two hits. Jacob Mesa led the team’s offensive efforts, going 4-for-4 with an RBI, while Frank Silva and Joel Osuna leach went 2-for-3 with one RBI each.
The Blackhawks play Cathedral City Friday at 6:30.
Local three-way match: Coachella Valley (242) defeated Palm Springs (296) and Desert Mirage (304) in a match at the Golf Club at La Quinta. Arab Juan Torres was medalist of the afternoon with a 43, while Robert Rodriguez (46), Jesus Zavala (48) and Izaiha Lucas (49) followed.
La Quinta vs. Indio: The Blackhawk girls came away with a 127-38 victory, including wins in all three relays. Hunter Olivier (200 IM and 100 breaststroke), Paige Schoppe (50 freestyle and 100 freestyle) and Mandy Strong (100 butterfly and 100 backstroke) led the team with two victories each. Mikka Von Scherr (200 freestyle) and Savannah Hampton (500 freestyle) each won as well.
The Blackhawks hit the pool next at Coachella Valley on April 7.
Coachella Valley vs. Cathedral City: The Arabs’ boys team came away with an 87-45 win, while the Cathedral City girls won 129-38. Roman Diaz led the Coachella Valley boys with wins in both the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly, while Eli Navarro won the 100 freestyle, and Cris Robles won the 100 breaststroke.
Andrea Ceja grabbed the lone win for the Arab girls in the 50 freestyle.
Xavier Prep vs. Palm Desert: The Saints’ girls swimming team came away with a 112-60 win over the Aztecs. Desiree Lewis (200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke) and Emma Johansen (500 freestyle and 100 backstroke) led the team with two victories each, while Erin Fleet (200 IM), Paulina Cordero (50 freestyle) and Jackie Cordero (100 butterfly) won one event each.
La Quinta 13, Cathedral City 5: Clayton Carlson led the Blackhawks with three wins in singles (6-1, 6-1, 6-0) while Gabriel Hermant (6-1, 6-0) and Jaret Prahl (7-6, 6-2) both won twice. Phillip Ross and Kai Martin won three sets in doubles (7-6, 6-1, 6-2), Ramon Ruiz and Gerardo Cortez won twice (7-5, 6-1) and Dylan Huber and Ivan Fernandez won once (6-2).
Shadow Hills vs. Desert Christian Academy: The Knights came away with two identical 8-2 victories in a double-header against the Conquerors Thursday. In the win, Amy Ibarra came away with six hits, six runs scored and four RBIs, while Ayanna Murphy added four hits and four runs.
Kerri Razo and Brianna Lucrecio both pitched complete games in the victories.
For the Conquerors, Ashley Klopfenstein and Kaylee Espinoza batted particularly well in the second game, going 2-for-4 each while both batting in a run.
The Roadrunners stayed undefeated in their third Pac Conference match a Soboba Springs Wednesday with a team score of 376, defeating Mt. San Jacinto (381) and Palomar (390). Michael Starbuck and Mike Schaloum led COD with 72s, followed by Ryan Emery’s 73, Kenzo Vlassaks’ 79, Marc Cohen’s 80 and Sam Jackson’s 81.
The team plays on Monday at Cottonwood Country Club for their next conference match.
