One year later, the Haldane High School girls soccer team will get another shot.
The Blue Devils will face Section 11’s Port Jefferson in the Class C state regional final Saturday at Yorktown High School.
Haldane was eliminated from the 2015 Class C playoffs by Port Jefferson in the regional final. The Blue Devils earned a rematch Tuesday with a 6-1 victory over Sullivan West in the regional semifinals, led by Hannah Monteleone’s three goals.
“We were really focused and up to the challenge (Tuesday),” Haldane Coach Gary Van Asselt said. “We play all the big schools to prepare for these games, so we’re ready to play anybody. We want to keep playing.”
Haldane dominated from the first whistle, scoring the game’s first goal in three minutes.
Within the first 15 minutes, Haldane led 3-0.
Haldane’s goalkeeper, Amelia Hall, didn’t even touch the ball until there were 20 minutes left in the first half. She finished with four saves.
“I had two questions for my girls on the bus over here,” Asselt said. “Are you going to leave it all out on the field? And are you going to keep playing?”
Allison Chiera had two Haldane goals, while Missy Lisikatos had one goal and two assists.
“We treat all the games the same,” Asselt said. “ We’re just going to play Haldane soccer.”
