ST. GEORGES – Entering the fourth quarter tied with visiting Delaware Military Academy, St. Georges decided to go back to what made them successful over the years by using its power running game.

The Hawks ran 11 straight times before Robert Shorts connected with Jason Stewart for a 9-yard touchdown to take the lead, and their defense stopped the Seahawks on the next two possessions to earn a 27-14 victory in the first round of the DIAA Division II Football State Tournament on Saturday.

“We just wanted to keep possession of the ball on that last drive,” Hawks coach J.D. Maull said. “We went old-school St. Georges football, four yards, five yards a pop, and just took our time.”

The second-seeded Hawks (9-2) started the go-ahead drive at their own 12 with 11:53 left in the fourth quarter and reached the 50 in seven plays, and they moved into the red zone after a 36-yard run from Brian Benson on the eighth play.

Six plays later, St. Georges called its first pass of the drive when it faced third and goal from the nine of DMA (8-3).

After passing up the first option, Shorts found Stewart open in the end zone for the touchdown to give the Hawks the lead with 5:58 left in the fourth quarter.

“The play wasn’t designed to go to him,” Shorts, who threw three touchdown passes, said. “But I checked down to him because he was open. We made the play.”

Mason Fitzgerald made the extra point to give the Hawks a 21-14 lead, and their defense forced a turnover on downs with 3:20 left on the sixth-seeded Seahawks’ following possession.

Damani Wells put the game out of reach with 31-yard touchdown run to increase the lead to 13 with 1:42 left, and Wells said the Hawks’ strong fourth quarter was a result of them remembering who they were.

“We just settled down and played our style of football. We controlled it. We’re were blocking very well, running the ball well and holding on to the ball,” Wells said. “They were trying to trip us, so he had to settle down and play our style of football.”

DMA scored first on the opening play of the second quarter with Todd Turner’s 1-yard touchdown run, but St. Georges scored the next 14 points on a 77-yard touchdown pass from Shorts to Doug Phillips and a 27-yard touchdown pass from Shorts to Wells.

The Seahawks tied it at 14-all when Turner rushed for a 12-yard touchdown with 10:10 left in the third quarter.
