Webster Schroeder is celebrating having the best student section in the state.
The high school’s “Warrior Crew” won a statewide contest by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, the state’s governing body for sports. Two schools from the Syracuse area, Skaneateles and Cicero-North Syracuse, were also finalists in the third annual contest. Since Wednesday, the public was invited to vote for the winner on NYSPHSAA’s social media networks and Schroeder won.
Schroeder being the winner was announced Friday, but no voting figures were provided by the NYSPHSAA.
“The level of fan support from the Schroeder students has been nothing short of impressive,” Schroeder athletic director Gary Tirohn said. “It has made our school more of a community and family atmosphere. The student body has rallied around this, not only to support our athletic teams, but to build relationships within our school.”
Schroeder and the “Warrior Crew” will be presented a banner and honored by NYSPHSAA staff at a home athletic contest during the spring season.
The competition invites member schools to submit student-produced videos profiling their student section displaying sportsmanship and school spirit. NYSPHSAA staff reviewed those submissions prior to choosing three finalists. Each finalist received a visit from NYSPHSAA on a game night to interview student leaders and document the student section.
“Congratulations to the students at Webster Schroeder High School on being crowned the 2015-2016 Battle of the Fans champion,” NYSPHSAA executive director Robert Zayas said. “I thank our other finalists and the schools who submitted application videos for this year’s competition. The sportsmanship and school pride displayed in these videos truly symbolized what high school athletics is all about in New York.”
