A funny thing happened to Greece Athena soccer striker Ryan Lindeman during his team’s match against Pittsford Mendon.
Lindeman, a senior, discovered that opposing teams are taking him seriously.
“I started hearing, ‘mark Lindy’,” Lindeman said. “I didn’t know that people knew my name, a nickname my friends gave me. I was shocked.”
Lindeman had six goals and six assists before Athena’s sixth match, Sept. 15 at Pittsford Sutherland. Athena was 4-0-1, including a 5-1 win Sept. 9 over Pittsford Mendon at Athena. Lindeman played a part in all of the scoring by the Trojans, with two goals and three assists.
“The first five minutes we got a little feeling for the game, and the rest of the half we started connecting really well,’ and it showed the first goal,” Lindeman said. “A great moment, I went down to the endline, and I crossed over (a pass), and CJ Takatch had an amazing finish, an amazing diving header.
“Matter of fact, CJ Takatch had my assist, for the second goal. He gave a little header from the half line and I got the ball. I beat a defender and headed it forward. I had the goalie one-on-one.”
Lindeman played on Athena’s Class A state championship team in 2014 and helped the Trojans win the last two Section V Class A1 titles.
“It’s a pretty good start, but I’m not satisfied,” Lindeman said. “It’s definitely because of my teammates. I know CJ Takatch has a lot of my assists. Antonio Lagamba has no goals so far, but he’s definitely an impact player, definitely one to control the game.”
School/year: Greece Athena/senior.
Music that motivates him: “Definitely, Meek Mill. He’s the only artist I listen to before games, the only one to hype me up. I’m a J. Cole kind of fan, but that’s not going to get me hyped before a game. I also listen to Big Sean, he’s another one of my favorite rappers.”
Instagram or Snapchat: “Probably Snapchat, because of the stories and I get to see a lot of my friends all of the time. My longest streak was 162. Yeah, a lot of dedication.”
Favorite athlete: “I have two actually, (Lionel) Messi and Steph Curry. Steph Curry, I like how he works the ball, I love his handle, just like I like dribbling. He’s a great player to watch. Messi is just beautiful with the ball, a nice touch. Beautiful execution to make plays. I look up to that.”
