McKean (Wilmington, Del.) High School’s athletic director was arrested after state police say he offered a sexual act to a 16-year-old boy last week.
Brian R. Budd, 34, of Wilmington, also teaches math and coaches swimming at the school.
Budd contacted a 16-year-old acquaintance of his through text messaging and told him he wanted to introduce him to a 20-year-old woman, Master Cpl. Jeffrey Hale said. The two agreed to meet behind a shopping center.
When the teenager arrived, Budd appeared from a wood line, Hale said. The teen asked Budd where the woman was, at which time Budd “discreetly sent a text” to the teenager’s phone pretending to be the woman, he said.
“The text requested that the victim allow Budd to perform a sexual act on him,” Hale said, which prompted the teen to call 911.
Budd was arrested at the scene and charged with sexual solicitation of a child under 18 to engage in a prohibited sexual act. He was taken to Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington after failing to post $50,000 cash bail.
He has been placed on administrative leave following his arrest, according to a statement from the Red Clay Consolidated School District, where Budd is identified as an athletic director on school websites and a co-head swimming coach for the high school team. Superintendent Mervin Daugherty said in a statement on the district website that the school is cooperating with authorities in the investigation and were notified of the arrest Thursday.
“This incident is obviously deeply distressing to everyone in the Red Clay Community,” he said. “I remain confident that the principal and the McKean staff are committed to the physical and emotional well-being of their students.”
A Facebook profile listed as Brian Budd identifies him as a math teacher at McKean High School in the Red Clay Consolidated School District.
Police said further details will not be released because of the sensitive nature of the crime and to protect the identity of the 16-year-old.
