It’s Week 7 of the high school football season. Here are five players to watch in Friday’s night’s games:
Daveon Bell, Lawrence Central: The 5-7, 145-pound senior receiver continues to pile up the catches, yards and touchdowns. Bell had 12 receptions for 161 yards and two TDs last week in a 35-21 loss to Center Grove, his third game with at least 11 catches and 100 yards. For the season, Bell has 47 receptions for 542 yards and eight TDs. The Bears host North Central on Friday.
Gunnar Large, New Palestine: The 6-3, 170-pound senior quarterback had big shoes to fill after the graduation of Alex Neligh. Large has performed well, completing 63 percent of his passes for 961 yards and 12 touchdowns (four interceptions) and rushing for 484 yards. The Dragons are at Shelbyville on Friday in a battle of unbeaten teams.
Adam Mullett, Hamilton Southeastern: The 6-5 senior has been one of the most impressive quarterbacks in the area through six games, completing 54 percent of his passes for 1,707 yards and 13 touchdowns (with nine interceptions). Mullett passed for a school-record 463 yards and four TDs last week in a win over Zionsville. The Royals play at Noblesville on Friday.
Carter McGinnis, Guerin Catholic: The senior running back came up big for the Golden Eagles last week in a 42-27 win over Greenwood, rushing 29 times for 233 yards and three touchdowns. For the season, McGinnis has rushed for 919 yards and 14 touchdowns (9.2 yards per carry). Guerin Catholic hosts Brebeuf Jesuit on Friday night.
Pete Werner, Cathedral: The senior linebacker, a Notre Dame recruit, had a team-leading 11 solo tackles and 13 total tackles last week in a 40-16 win at Rhea County (Tenn.). In his past two games – against Rhea County and Cincinnati St. Xavier – Werner has 26 tackles, including six tackles for a loss. Cathedral is at Fishers on Friday night.
