One of the most exciting basketball scorers in the country will try to prove his worth in the 2016 Bass Pro Tournament of Champions.
Chaminade’s Jayson Tatus averages 30.3 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. The Duke University signee can drive the lane for layups and dunks or step back for a 3-pointer off the dribble.
The Chaminade Red Devils have one previous Tournament of Champions appearance, an 0-3 effort in 2010. Tatum and company come into the Jan. 14-16 basketball showcase with two key Tournament of Champions connections.
Tatum also scored 25 points in a much-anticipated, nationally televised game against Oak Hill Academy (ranked No. 5 in the USA TODAY Super 25 Expert Rankings) in which Chaminade (5-1) ultimately lost 69-62, the Red Devils’ only defeat of the season to this point. Oak Hill (Mouth of Wilson, Virginia) won the Bass Pro Tournament of Champions in 2015 and returns to defend the title this year.
The Red Devils beat Bentonville, Arkansas 76-57 at Chaminade on Dec. 12. Bentonville played in the Tournament of Champions last season and is led by Kentucky signee Malik Monk.
In the 2015 Tournament of Champions, Monk scored 50 points in a loss to Chino Hills in the fifth place game and then won the inaugural Great Southern Bank dunk contest.
In the scoring duel between Tatum and Monk, Tatum scored 40 points and Monk scored 36.
Chaminade plays one of the most storied Tournament of Champions schools in Christ the King (Middle Village, New York). The Royals will play in the 16th Tournament of Champions in the school’s history. Christ the King holds an all-time Tournament of Champions record of 31-13 and won six championships, including the first-ever Tournament of Champions in 1985 and most recently in 2008.
