The Brockport Blue Devils and Hilton Cadets may be rivals in the Monroe Country league, but they proudly share at least one distinction.
Hilton and Brockport are among the top wrestling teams in Section V, as the Cadets won the Class AA championships and the Blue Devils took the Class A title Saturday at Gates Chili.
This is the third consecutive title for Brockport.
“Our only three,” Brockport coach Mike Ferris said.
Jake Sweet at 195 pounds joined Brockport teammates Carson Daly (145), Troy Ferris (126) and Cody Anders (126) as Class A weight class champions. Tyler Johnson also was among seven finalists from Brockport, but had to wrestle Sweet in the 195 final.
“Once we started wrestling after Christmas, I had guys in the right places and guys were getting healthy,” Ferris said. “We were wrestling great, all cylinders really. The kids looked tough.
“In the past, we’ve usually used this tournament as a focal point for success. Often times we compete in more difficult tournaments to prepare for this one. My kids always find a way to wrestle above their seed. My whole team did that this weekend.”
The Blue Devils scored 281 points without 182-pounder Cameron Caldarelli, a fourth-place finisher at the 2015 state championships. Caldarelli separated a shoulder during a dual meet against Hilton. He was unable to wrestle at sectionals, but expects to compete next weekend at SuperSectionals, Section V’s qualifier for states.
All wrestlers who placed in the top-six of their sectional tournaments advance to SuperSectionals.
The Hilton Cadets will have a sizable crew at The College at Brockport.
Hilton scored 271 points after nine Cadets reached the finals. Greg Diakomihalis (99), Austin Hertel (120), Yianni Diakomihalis (138), Louie DePrez (170) and Mike Spallina (182) claimed sectional class championships.
“I hate losing to the other teams,’’ Yianni Diakomihalis said after he improved to 46-0 this season. “It’s fun competition and I like the other kids, but I like the competition. So when we win it’s fun.
“It’s not just about me. For some of the new guys it’s good for confidence. We are a part of something good, it’s Hilton doing good.’’
Hilton, 18-2 in dual meets this season, finished second at the Union-Endicott Duals earlier this month. That meet has a large impact on the final state rankings.
The Cadets turned back defending champion Fairport and Penfield at sectionals. Penfield sophomore Frankie Gissendanner, a state champion in 2015, became a four-time sectional class champion.
“It’s going great,” Gissendanner said. “My team went 24-0 this year. We put seven guys in the (sectional) finals, four or five guys wrestled back tough. We’re top 20 in the state (No. 19).
“There is a little flaw there (Hilton is No. 3, Fairport No. 12, Brockport No. 15, and Rush-Henrietta No. 25). I don’t know, I think there is a little favoritism, but hey we still have work to do the next couple of weeks.”
