Count Hilton among the Section V wrestling programs that have made a drastic change to the tournaments the schools host annually.
The 2017 Clayton Barnard Memorial at Hilton goes to a dual meet tournament format, from an individual weight class tournament format. Last year’s tournament at Hilton would have been the 35th annual, but was canceled because of conflicts with academic testing and the Eastern States Classic.
The plan is to have 10 teams, divided into two pools of five next year.
“We were starting to struggle attracting teams,” Hilton coach Craig Gross said. “I thought that this was a way to get some more good teams in here.
“If we could do more that would be great,” Gross said.
Gross believes that Section V will put together a dual meet team tournament in the future, and that the Clayton Barnard Memorial could be a blueprint for that event.
Spencerport’s two-day Teike/Bernabi Tournament remained an individual weight class tournament, but went to a pool format on the first day. Webster Schroeder’s Matthew Marino Invitational went to a round-robin style in recent years, in order to provide more matches for wrestlers.
