WHITE PLAINS – Maybe it’s a turning point.

Antonino Cappello quickly located the puck in a tangle of sticks and swept in the rebound with 6.1 seconds to play on Thursday, helping White Plains salvage a 4-4 tie against North Rockland at Ebersole Ice Rink.

It was a step in the right direction.

The Tigers have been playing catch-up since they opened the season with five straight losses. They kept falling behind the Red Raiders, but answered each and every goal.

“It pushes us to play a little better, pushes us to play a little harder,” Cappello said.

North Rockland went ahead 4-3 with 2:57 to play when Dylan Cool lobbed a puck on net.

“It was the end of the shift,” said the sophomore forward, who was celebrating his 16th birthday. “I was just dumping the puck in so we could make the change and got a lucky bounce off a stick and it went in.”

The Red Raiders skated the final 30 seconds 4-on-6 after taking a slashing penalty.

Brendan McDonough fired the puck into a crowd and Cappello took it from there, sparking a wild celebration.

The game clearly meant plenty to White Plains (4-6-1).

“I loved the effort tonight and we got stronger as the game went on,” Tigers coach Howie Rubenstein said. “We’ve been working on a few little things and we executed them tonight, and I really liked our game.”

North Rockland goalie Kenny Hoppe was clearly frustrated.

“I made the first save and there were a bunch of sticks whacking all over the place,” he said. “I went down for the cover and they popped it in. That was a killer. I’m pretty disappointed. I really wanted to get a win. It’s our second tie in a row.”

Hoppe came right back with two memorable saves in overtime to preserve the tie for the Red Raiders (4-2-2).

Player of the game: Brendan McDonough. The senior forward had a goal and two assists for White Plains and kept the pressure on the Red Raiders each time they grabbed a lead.

Turning point: Matt Posilipo gave North Rockland a 3-2 lead with 4:33 to go in the second, but James Carrier answered for the Tigers when he scored from a difficult angle with 3:12 to go in the period.

Stat line: Chris Hilliard and Bryan Jensen also scored for the Red Raiders. … Eric Brotmann and McDonough had the first two White Plains goals. … The Tigers outshot North Rockland by a 6-3 margin in the overtime.

Quotable: “He’s technically great,” Rubenstein said of 4-foot-11 freshman goalie Justin Schulz, who made 16 saves. “He’s got a great attitude. The job is not too big for him.”
