The Holy Cross High School softball team beat Hancock County 5-4 in eight innings on Sunday to capture the All “A” Classic state championship at Jack C. Fisher Park in Owensboro, Kentucky.

The Cougars (15-8-1) won four games Sunday to capture their second straight title in the All “A” Classic, which is limited to the 120 smallest high schools in the state based on enrollments in grades 9-12.

Holy Cross’ Shelby Atzinger was named the tournament’s MVP. Cougars Jennifer Peffley, Allie Just and Kameron Bowling also were named to the all-tournament team.

Saturday’s pool play was rained out, leaving all 16 teams to play in a single-elimination tournament on Sunday. Holy Cross defeated Whitefield Academy 18-0 in the first round, Glasgow 8-1 in the quarterfinals and Lyon County 8-2 in the semifinals.

Holy Cross also defeated Hancock County in last year’s All “A” final, 10-6.
