Homer is losing a football coach and an athletic director all in one move as Matt Moffett will be leaving the school to become the new football coach at Forest Hills Northern.
Moffett, who has been the varsity football coach and athletic director at Homer for the past four years, took the Trojans to the playoffs each of the past three seasons and has a 31-12 record over his span as the head of the program.
“We had a pretty good run here with some great kids. We had kids here that bought into what I was preaching and it showed up in the results,” Moffett said. “Homer was a great place to be. I wouldn’t be where I am going if it weren’t for the kids here at Homer and the backing of the administration.”
Under Moffett, Homer had one of its best seasons ever in 2013 as the team went 11-2 and advanced to the Division 7 state semifinals.
Moffett said he was intrigued at a few possible head football coaching jobs around the state and decided to look into them. Forest Hills Northern has finished 7-3 each of the last three seasons under head coach Ryan Oshnock, who has accepted the coaching position at Holland West Ottawa.
“Something I have been thinking about. It’s a good opportunity,” Moffett said.
Moffett will continue in his role as athletic director for the rest of the school year before he will step down from that role. He is not sure he will be involved in the search for a new football coach. Announcing the news of his new job right before spring break, Moffett says he will know more about Homer’s search for a new football coach when he returns to school after vacation.
