The high school girls basketball sectional begins Tuesday with games at multiple area sites. Here’s a look at the local sectional matchups, with players to watch, top games and predictions.
The sectional championship games are all set for Saturday at 7 p.m.
Sectional 7 at McCutcheon
Games: Tuesday, Logansport (3-19) vs. Lafayette Jeff (5-18), 6 p.m.; Zionsville (17-3) vs. Kokomo (14-8), 7:45 p.m.; Friday, McCutcheon (10-13) vs. Game 1 winner, 6 p.m.; Harrison (3-19) vs. Game 2 winner, 7:45 p.m.
Skinny: Zionsville’s first sectional title since 1996 is within reach, but it’ll get the toughest draw possible with Kokomo — the only other team with a winning record in the sectional — Tuesday.
Pick: Zionsville. It’s been a remarkable turnaround for the Eagles, who haven’t enjoyed a winning season since 2003-04. Zionsville’s top four scorers (freshman Maddie Nolan leads at 13.2 ppg) are freshmen or sophomores.
Sectional 8 at Westfield
Games: Tuesday, Carmel (19-4) vs. Hamilton Southeastern (11-10), 6 p.m.; Anderson (10-14) vs. Noblesville (22-4), 7:45 p.m.; Friday, Fishers (6-16) vs. Game 1 winner; Westfield (20-3) vs. Game 2 winner, 7:45 p.m.
Skinny: Carmel, Noblesville and Westfield are all in the top 13 teams in the state by the Sagarin Ratings. Hamilton Southeastern is a sleeper.
Pick: Carmel. The Greyhounds are 5-0 against sectional opponents, beating Noblesville by eight and Westfield by three. Senior Emily Kmec (11.5 ppg, 7.2 rebounds) and sophomore Amy Dilk (11.3 ppg, 5.3 rebounds) lead Carmel.
Sectional 9 at Mt. Vernon
Games: Tuesday, Mt. Vernon (15-8) vs. Connersville (4-19), 6 p.m.; New Castle (19-3) vs. Greenfield-Central (19-4), 7:45 p.m.; Friday, Richmond (8-13) vs. Game 1 winner; Pendleton Heights (11-12) vs. Game 2 winner, 7:45 p.m.
Skinny: Should be a very competitive field with Greenfield-Central and New Castle, the favorites, meeting in the first round Tuesday.
Pick: Greenfield-Central. The Cougars swept the Hoosier Heritage Conference schedule, including a 50-39 win against New Castle two weeks ago. Junior Madison Wise is averaging 22.1 points and 10.8 rebounds.
Sectional 10 at North Central
Games: Tuesday, Tech (13-10) vs. Lawrence Central (2-19), 6 p.m.; Warren Central (12-11) vs. North Central (17-5), 7:45 p.m.; Friday, Cathedral (15-8) vs. Game 1 winner, 6 p.m.; Lawrence North (18-3) vs. Game 2 winner, 7:45 p.m.
Skinny: North Central, Cathedral and Warren Central are good teams. North Central beat Lawrence North 59-56 in the Marion County tournament in December, though Lawrence North returned the favor (by 18 points) a week ago.
Pick: Lawrence North. The Wildcats, a legit state title contender, have three losses by a combined six points.
Sectional 11 at Decatur Central
Games: Friday, Decatur Central (6-16) vs. Southport (11-11), 6 p.m.; Roncalli (20-4) vs. Perry Meridian (6-15), 7:45 p.m.
Skinny: This sectional took on a much different look after Ben Davis and Pike were disqualified by the IHSAA after a fight. Roncalli is the clear favorite.
Pick: Roncalli. McDonald’s All American Lindsey Corsaro (1,782 career points) is 40 points from breaking the school’s career record.
Sectional 12 at Brownsburg
Games: Tuesday, Plainfield (21-2) vs. Mooresville (17-6), 6 p.m.; Avon (4-18) vs. Terre Haute North (13-9), 7:45 p.m.; Friday, Brownsburg (16-7) vs. Game 1 winner, 6 p.m.; Terre Haute South (11-11) vs. Game 2 winner, 7:45 p.m.
Skinny: A third Plainfield-Brownsburg matchup would be fitting. The Quakers won the first 52-50, and the Bulldogs took the next one, 52-51. Plainfield first has to get past a tough Mooresville team Tuesday. Mooresville beat Brownsburg by 13 in November.
Pick: Mooresville. Toss a three-headed coin here. Terre Haute North is pretty good, too, and has a favorable draw.
Sectional 13 at Center Grove
Games: Tuesday, Franklin (8-14) vs. Martinsville (15-7), 7 p.m.; Wednesday, Franklin Central (6-16) vs. Greenwood (13-9), 6 p.m.; New Palestine (16-6) vs. Whiteland (13-9), 7:45 p.m.; Friday, Center Grove (10-12) vs. Game 1 winner, 6 p.m.; Game 2 winner vs. Game 3 winner, 7:45 p.m.
Skinny: Another competitive and wide-open field. Greenwood is 7-0 against the field, but four wins were by seven points or less.
Pick: Greenwood. Senior Holly Hoopingarner (IUPUI) is averaging 23.7 points per game.
Sectional 14 at Bloomington North
Games: Tuesday, East Central (17-6) vs. Bloomington North (1-21), 6 p.m.; Columbus East (13-10) vs. Shelbyville (12-10), 7:45 p.m.; Friday, Bloomington South (13-9) vs. Game 1 winner, 6 p.m.; Columbus North (22-1) vs. Game 2 winner, 7:45 p.m.
Skinny: Columbus North is the class of the field with Bloomington South and East Central as potential sleepers.
Pick: Columbus North. Junior Maliah Howard-Bass is averaging 18.5 points for the Bull Dogs.
Sectional 24 at Hamilton Heights
Games: Tuesday, Delta (4-18) vs. Tipton (14-9), 7 p.m.; Wednesday, Heritage Christian (19-4) vs. Guerin Catholic (14-10), 6 p.m.; Hamilton Heights (11-11) vs. Marion (20-3), 7:45 p.m.; Friday, Yorktown (7-13) vs. Game 1 winner, 6 p.m.; Game 2 winner vs. Game 3 winner, 7:45 p.m.
Skinny: Can anyone beat Heritage Christian? Some unfamiliarity here as the top contenders, Heritage Christian and Marion, have played no one from the sectional during the season.
Pick: Heritage Christian. Marion’s senior duo of Vironnica Drake (20.4 ppg) and Julia Cardwell (16.5 ppg) could give the Eagles a run.
Sectional 25 at Western Boone
Games: Tuesday, Crawfordsville (2-20) vs. Lebanon (17-6), 7 p.m.; Wednesday, Frankfort (1-22) vs. Tri-West (8-14), 6 p.m.; Western Boone (16-7) vs. North Montgomery (8-15), 7:45 p.m.; Friday, Greencastle (18-4) vs. Game 1 winner, 6 p.m.; Game 2 winner vs. Game 3 winner, 7:45 p.m.
Skinny: No team in the sectional has come within 20 points of Lebanon.
Pick: Lebanon. Kristen Spolyar (36.8 ppg) and Co. could be challenged by Western Boone but are the clear favorite here.
Sectional 27 at Brebeuf Jesuit
Games: Tuesday, Marshall (0-21) vs. Herron (9-13), 6 p.m.; Manual (13-9) vs. Bishop Chatard (10-14), 7:45 p.m.; Friday, Brebeuf Jesuit (6-15) vs. Game 1 winner, 6 p.m.; Crispus Attucks (17-4) vs. Game 2 winner, 7:45 p.m.
Skinny: Crispus Attucks hasn’t won a sectional since 1983 and could be the team to beat here.
Pick: Attucks. The Tigers haven’t played Chatard or Brebeuf, however.
Sectional 28 at Indian Creek
Games: Tuesday, Northwest (2-17) vs. Danville (17-7), 6 p.m.; Washington (5-12) vs. Indian Creek (17-4), 7:45 p.m.; Friday, Beech Grove (13-10) vs. Game 1 winner; Cardinal Ritter (17-5) vs. Game 2 winner, 7:45 p.m.
Skinny: Three 17-win teams here and another — Beech Grove — is dangerous.
Pick: Danville has a better draw than Indian Creek or Cardinal Ritter, which will probably meet in a semifinal on Friday. I’ll take Ritter, which is led by senior Taylor Speckman (16.2 ppg).
Sectional 40 at Frankton
Games: Tuesday, Sheridan (13-9) vs. Monroe Central (17-6), 6 p.m.; Frankton (17-6) vs. Wapahani (19-4), 7:45 p.m.; Friday, Muncie Burris (3-18) vs. Game 1 winner, 6 p.m.; Lapel (16-7) vs. Game 2 winner, 7:45 p.m.
Skinny: Rivals Frankton and Lapel could meet in a semifinal Friday. Frankton won the first two meetings, including a 49-48 overtime victory.
Pick: Frankton. Wapahani and Monroe Central also are capable of factoring in.
Sectional 42 at Eastern Hancock
Games: Tuesday, Knightstown (4-18) vs. Triton Central (12-10), 6 p.m.; Eastern Hancock (15-7) vs. Irvington Prep (4-19), 7:45 p.m.; Friday, Howe (8-7) vs. Game 1 winner; Shenandoah (6-15) vs. Game 2 winner, 7:45 p.m.
Skinny: Eastern Hancock and Triton Central is a likely pairing in the championship game. Triton Central has won the sectional three of the last four years.
Pick: Triton Central. The Tigers defeated Eastern Hancock 41-22 in January.
Sectional 43 at Speedway
Games: Tuesday, Park Tudor (9-12) vs. Shortridge (4-15), 6 p.m.; Covenant Christian (17-5) vs. Broad Ripple (5-15), 7:45 p.m.; Friday, Scecina (12-10) vs. Game 1 winner, 6 p.m.; Speedway (4-16) vs. Game 2 winner, 7:45 p.m.
Skinny: Covenant Christian is an overwhelming favorite.
Pick: Covenant Christian. The Warriors are led by junior Rachel McLimore (20.9 ppg).
Sectional 44 at South Putnam
Games: Tuesday, South Putnam (11-11) vs. Cascade (14-8), 6 p.m.; North Putnam (3-19) vs. Cloverdale (7-15), 7:45 p.m.; Friday, Southmont (9-12) vs. Game 1 winner, 6 p.m.; Monrovia (13-9) vs. Game 2 winner, 7:45 p.m.
Skinny: Cascade and Monrovia are the top contenders.
Pick: Cascade. The Cadets are 4-0 against the field, including a six-point win against Monrovia. Cascade hasn’t won a sectional in nine years.
Sectional 57 at Clay City
Games: Tuesday, Eminence (3-17) vs. Clay City (16-8), 6 p.m.; North Central (Farmersburg) (12-11) vs. White River Valley (12-11), 7:45 p.m.; Friday, Bloomfield (17-5) vs. Game 1 winner, 6 p.m.; Shakamak (4-18) vs. Game 2 winner, 7:45 p.m.
Skinny: Bloomfield can win its first sectional since 2007.
Sectional 58 at University
Games: Tuesday, Indiana Deaf (15-7) vs. University (14-8), 6 p.m.; International (17-6) vs. Metropolitan (4-19), 7:45 p.m.; Friday, Tindley (21-2) vs. Game 1 winner, 6 p.m.; Bethesda Christian (14-8) vs. Game 2 winner, 7:45 p.m.
Skinny: Tindley is a big favorite.
Pick: Tindley should win its fourth consecutive sectional title. Sophomore Skye Williams (19.4 ppg) leads the team in scoring.
Sectional 59 at Morristown
Games: Tuesday, Lutheran (7-14) vs. Greenwood Christian (14-9), 6 p.m.; Morristown (8-13) vs. Central Christian (10-13), 7:45 p.m.; Friday, Edinburgh (8-14) vs. Game 1 winner, 6 p.m.; Arlington (14-7) vs. Game 2 winner, 7:45 p.m.
Skinny: Morristown is 4-0 against the field and is the two-time defending champ.
Pick: Morristown. This is a wide-open sectional, however.
Sectional 60 at Jac-Cen-Del
Games: Tuesday, Waldron (11-10) vs. Hauser (13-8), 7 p.m.; Wednesday, Rising Sun (13-9) vs. Oldenburg Academy (1-20), 6 p.m.; Southwestern (Shelbyville) (11-10) vs. South Decatur (3-18), 7:45 p.m.; Friday, Jac-Cen-Del (21-1) vs. Game 1 winner; Game 2 winner vs. Game 3 winner, 7:45 p.m.
Skinny: Jac-Cen-Del is the favorite to win its eighth consecutive sectional.
