Journi Northorp once thought diving for a college program was a pipe dream.
On Wednesday the Mariner senior inked her National Letter of Intent to join the University of Buffalo swimming and diving program. She donned a blue Bulls hat and sat next her mother, Shannon, and other family members as she signed her NCAA paperwork.
“When I started out diving in high school, I finished 14th my freshman year in states,” she said. “I didn’t think I would get as far as I am now. But seeing last year as I progressed a lot and moved up to second, I have to keep going up.”
Northorp, a runner-up at last year’s Class 2A championships, chose the Bulls over Houston and the Air Force. She will compete in the 1- and 3-meter dives at Buffalo, though added that she hopes to add tower dives to her resume.
“I always knew she was capable of it because of her motivation and constant hard work,” Mariner swimming coach Dena Uebe said.
A four-time qualifier in the state diving championships, Northorp, who plans to study engineering, heads into competition on Saturday with a real shot at winning her first state title at Sailfish Splashpark Aquatics Athletic Center in Stuart.
“There’s no room for error,” she said.
As a junior, she finished second in LCAC, District 2A-10, Region 2A-3 and the Class 2A championships. This year, she’s posted wins in every single meet but her last. At districts, she posted the highest point total of her career, logging 506.25 points.
Northorp, who will arrive at Buffalo on a 75-percent scholarship, hopes to finish her senior season with one last trophy.
“I’m really excited,” she said.
