Call it prescient on the part of Hudl, a popular video hosting service, for the following tweet on Monday:
It's #NationalChampionship Day. While you wait for tipoff, help us crown a different champion – vote for your favorite Hudl highlight!— Hudl (@Hudl) April 4, 2016
The national championship is tonight. People are in the mood for basketball. Reminding them of outstanding basketball plays is probably a good thing.
So likely goes the thinking.
But then the national championship actually came and went, with North Carolina’s Marcus Paige hitting the first heroic shot to tie before Villanova’s Kris Jenkins confidently delivered the dagger. The biggest moments in the biggest game. Unbelievable shots. In the case of the game-winner, a transcendent sports moment.
As crazy as Jenkins’s shot was, I’m not sure it was of a higher degree of insanity when compared to Sioux Falls Christian’s Laettner-esque walk-off against Western Christian on Feb. 11.
A mid-air Keegan Van Egdom banked the game-winner off the glass after hauling in a full-court heave from teammate Chad Barkema. It was one of a handful of defining moments in a season that eventuated in the program’s first state title.
As it turns out, the Van Egdom-via-Barkema ending earned Hudl’s No. 1 seed for its “Final Four” of great plays from the past basketball season. The original link on Hudl has amassed nearly 18,000 views.
Here’s the play it’s up against:
And lastly, here’s where you can cast your vote. (Voting ends Tuesday, April 5 at 1 p.m. CT)
