Indy star Scruggs: No pressure to stay home

INDIANAPOLIS – Paul Scruggs is one of the top three high school players in Indiana. He is a star guard at Southport High, and he is at the top of the wish list for Tom Crean’s Indiana Hoosiers.

But Scruggs, a powerful, skilled 6-foot-3 guard, said he feels no pressure to pick the home-state Hoosiers – or nearby Louisville, for that matter – despite the heavy presence of IU fans at his AAU game Saturday evening at the Under Armour Association’s AAU event here at Best Choice Fieldhouse in the outskirts of Indianapolis.

“Because I haven’t (made any decisions) and I really haven’t thought about that yet,” he said.

Instead, Scruggs let out a laugh and admitted that, right now, he is “just kind of cruising on down” the recruiting road, soaking up the attention from his suitors and trying to gather as much information as possible.

He said Indiana, Louisville, Michigan State and Xavier are the four programs that are consistently in touch with him. He met with Michigan State’s coaches this past week, but he hasn’t sat down with any other staffs yet. He hasn’t considered any potential campus visits, either.

There is, however, a common theme among the four main programs recruiting Scruggs the hardest, he said.

“I like a team that likes to get gritty,” Scruggs said.

Louisville’s coaching staff is in frequent contact with him. The staff isn’t allowed out on the road this month as part of the university’s self-imposed punishment amid an ongoing NCAA investigation into the program, but the coaches have kept in touch via text message and phone calls.

“They’ve just been texting me after every game asking me how I did,” Scruggs said. “Louisville is an outstanding program. That’s what I like about them. They seem to do well with all their players.”

Scruggs said his parents have started bouncing ideas off him and asking him questions to foster more thought about his recruiting process. But for now, his main focus is on his development, and the progress he’s made on his jump shot was clear on Saturday night, as he made five of his six shots, including 2 of 3 from 3-point range, and finished with 17 points.
