For the first time since 2012, Iona Prep is heading to the CHSAA “AA” championship series.
The Gaels defeated defending champion Monsignor Farrell 3-0 on Tuesday at St. John’s University, clinching their spot in the finals of the double-elimination tournament.
In his first start since throwing a no-hitter against Xaverian on Wednesday, senior Joe LaSorsa put on a show from the mound where he’ll pitch regularly next year. The St. John’s-bound left-hander threw a three-hitter to continue his streak of strong outings. He threw 64 of his 101 pitches for strikes and struck out 11.
Michael Gorman also stayed hot for Iona Prep (19-6-1), hitting an RBI single in the third inning and adding a two-out RBI double in the fifth. He had three RBI in Monday’s 13-0 win over Kennedy.
The Gaels will play at St. John’s University again on Friday at 7:30 p.m. against an opponent that is yet to be determined. A win would clinch the CHSAA title, while a loss would force a winner-takes-all game on Saturday.
McClancy 8, Kennedy 6 (8 innings): At St. John’s University, Eric Volpi hit an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings, but the Gaels (18-8) were eliminated from the CHSAA “AA” baseball playoffs.
Kennedy led 5-1 after four innings thanks to a two-run single from Volpi, an RBI single from Jazz Burton and a two-run double from Nick Gastin. McClancy rallied to take the lead in the sixth before Volpi tied it in the seventh.
