Wherever Iona Prep catcher Chris Dutra put his glove on Wednesday, Joe LaSorsa found it.
The St. John’s-bound lefty was on point in the opening game of the CHSAA “AA” Division championships, throwing a rare playoff no-hitter in a 4-0 win over Xaverian at Fordham University.
“Whatever I saw my catcher put down, I knew it was going to be a strike,” LaSorsa said. “Chris and I’s game plan was to get them off balance and make them feel as uncomfortable as possible at the plate.”
LaSorsa faced 22 batters, one more than the minimum, walking two but erasing one of them with a 4-6-3 double play in the fourth inning. He struck out nine and threw 51 of his 75 pitches for strikes.
Dutra went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Jon DiFiorio and Andrew Militie each had an RBI.
The Gaels (17-6-1) picked up a crucial win to begin the double-elimination tournament. Their next game is to be announced.
“For the team to have a no-hitter, it sets the tone for the rest of the playoffs and gives us that grit coach (Ryan Mahoney) has been looking for,” LaSorsa said.
