Macee Williams of Fountain Central goes up for a layup in sectional action against Carroll, Feb. 3.

Macee Williams was a high school freshman when former Fountain Central girls basketball coach Amie Anthrop planted the message in her head.

Anthrop, a stellar point guard at the University of Southern Indiana, told the Mustangs post player that if she worked on her game, she,  too would be playing basketball beyond high school.

Williams had a breakthrough sophomore year, then backed it up with an even bigger junior season.

And she will play basketball at the next level.

On Saturday, the 6-foot senior verbally committed to IUPUI, choosing coach Austin Parkinson’s program over numerous Division I offers.

“I had an open gym with them one time and the girls were so unbelievable and nice,” Williams said. “IUPUI is close, so my family can come to all the home games, and my friends, too.”

The forward for Sky Digg Elite AAU, a multisport standout at Fountain Central, is coming off a strong summer that saw her also participate as a member of the Indiana Junior All-Stars against the seniors last month.

As a sophomore, Williams led the Mustangs to the regional championship game and last season as a junior averaged 21.7 points, 14.6 rebounds, 3.3 steals, 3.2 blocks and 2.3 assists and shot 66 percent from the field.

Williams was drawn to IUPUI in addition to basketball by the medical school. IUPUI is located in Downtown Indianapolis with numerous hospitals within walking distance to campus.

She also considered Bowling Green and Belmont, but was elated to make a decision prior to the start of her senior year.

“I knew IUPUI was in my heart,” Williams said. “Now I won’t have to stress over it.”
