Danny Diedrich ran for two touchdowns, Calvin Anthony scored on the ground and Jai’von Reynolds caught a touchdown in the first half as the John Jay football team secured a 41-14 win over visiting Fox Lane on Friday.
The Patriots (4-1) pulled away in the second half, aided by two special teams touchdowns in the third quarter. Dylan Burnett returned the opening kickoff of the third for a touchdown, and James Luciano returned a punt 65 yards for a score to make it 35-7.
“We did a good job in all facets of the game, but special teams certainly stood out and helped our offense,” Patriots coach Tom O’Hare said.
The coach lauded the defense, in particular Luciana and Skyler Smith, and cornerbacks Dylan Burnett and Reynolds on defense.
“(Fox Lane) has some good receivers and the score dictated that they would throw a lot,” O’Hare said. “But our corners did well. I was proud of the whole defense and especially that secondary unit.”
John Jay entered the season with a rebuilding roster, including a defense that starts nine underclassmen. Since a loss to Arlington three weeks ago, the Patriots have scored two blowout victories.
“We knew we’d have to learn on the fly and we hoped by the middle or late in the season, we’d be playing our best,” O’Hare said. “These kids are growing fast as players and it’s starting to click. We believe in getting better each day. If everyone does that, winning usually takes care of itself.”
John Jay visits Mahopac at 7 p.m. Friday.
