The Kalamazoo Central Maroon Giants, led by Division I junior prospect Isaiah Livers, used an up-tempo, basket-to-basket offense to outscore the host Spartans 67-35 in Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference boys basketball action.

“They’ve got all the pieces,” Lakeview head coach Steve Wichmann said. “They’ve got the guard, and they obviously have the size. That’s where we struggled tonight, manning up with their size. First quarter we did a nice job with our game plan. We wanted to make sure we took quality shots. In the second quarter, they sped us up a little too much. We didn’t take bad shot… we just didn’t get a lot of shots.”

Going forward, Lakeview (1-4, 0-3) will play Portage Central Jan. 12. With the win, the Giants moved to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in conference.

Early on, Lakeview had no trouble scoring inside on the Giants’ low-post defense. In a contest that saw four lead changes in the first quarter, it was crucial for the Spartans’ offense to score each possession. The beneficiary early on was 6-foot-6 center Jared Fisk.

Fisk’s two baskets gave Lakeview an early three-point lead. The Spartans, however, had trouble containing K-Central’s 6-foot-8 Livers. A forward, Livers had six points in the first quarter – all on driving lay-ups. After a quarter of play, the Giants led, 12-11.

Despite the close play of the first quarter, K-Central came out in the second quarter on a 12-0 run, prompting a Lakeview timeout with 5:13 left in the first half. The Spartans would only manage six points for the remainder of the quarter, as the Giants outscored the Spartans 27-6. Livers finished the half with a game-high 12 points, and he would not return in the second half.

At half, K-Central led 39-17.

“You know, I thought we settled in,” Kalamazoo Central head coach Ramsey Nichols said. “We started focusing on the things we knew we had to do, and that’s getting the ball inside on the offensive end. I thought we missed some defensive assignments. They came out ready, and I knew they were going to come out with some intensity. They played well early on…. I thought we did a good job turning up our defensive intensity after the first quarter.”

Fisk led Lakeview with seven points and six boards, while C.J. Foster had five points, three rebounds and three assists.

The Giants’ 5-foot-9 guard Jeremiah Richard had a game high 15 points.
