Players aren't the only ones enjoying annual all-star game

It’s not just an honor for the players to be invited to participate in the Kentucky Derby Festival Basketball Classic. The coaches feel the same way, too.

Four area coaches will take part in Friday’s game, with New Albany coach Jim Shannon, who just led his Bulldogs to Indiana’s Class 4-A state title, will coach the Maroon Team with Fern Creek’s James Schooler.

For Shannon, getting this invite can be a credibility boost.

“What I think it does basically is when my kids at home see that I’m coaching in something like this, it just adds a little bit to my coaching in terms of, ‘Well, he must know what he’s doing if they asked him,’” Shannon said.

“Whether that’s true or not, it doesn’t matter. It just helps give our program more notoriety, more publicity.”
