Fossil Ridge High School athletic director Ken Denning resigned from his post Wednesday morning.
“It’s a tough day. Very hard,” Denning said. “The current direction of the athletics in the district have caused a philosophical dilemma for me, which I think has led to this decision.”
Denning has been Fossil Ridge’s athletic director since 2009.
On March 25, Denning told football coach Brian Tinker that his contract would not be renewed, but principal Will Allen has said he made that decision, not Denning. Denning did not specifically cite the parent and student backlash surrounding Tinker’s removal as part of his decision to step down.
“I’ll miss our student-athletes and our coaches and our parents and our community,” Denning said. “I’m very thankful for the time and everything that I had here. I’ll try to figure out what I do in the next chapter of my life. I’m really proud of what we’ve done.”
Denning will fulfill his contract through June 9.
“We support him in his decision and wish him only the best in his future endeavors,” said Danielle Clark, Poudre School District’s executive director of communications.
His resignation will need to be approved by the school board in May. Clark said the hiring process of Denning’s replacement will involve PSD collaboration, but is run by the school.
Denning’s hires at Fossil Ridge include softball coach Dave Philop, swim coach Carolyn Fries and girls basketball coach Chad Salz.
