At least we can safely say this was not an attempt to ice the kicker.
As Rogers (Florence, Ala.) was getting into position to attempt the game-winning field goal in the final minute against Deshler (Tuscumbia), the stadium lights went out.
The game was at Rogers so it’s not like the home team was trying to freeze its own kicker.
After a 10-minute delay, the lights came back on. After a 4-yard run, Rogers called timeout to get the kicking unit on the field with four seconds left. Deshler then took consecutive timeouts to actually ice the kicker.
But Bryant Wallace went out and drilled the 30-yarder to keep Rogers unbeaten.
“I knew I was going to make the kick when I walked out there,” the senior kicker told the Times Daily. “We practice this situation all the time, so the pressure didn’t get to me at all.”
