For the first time in 20 years, the Byrd Lady Jackets soccer team is headed to the state championship.

Byrd goalie Maddy Talbot is hugged by Hope Miletello (7), Taylor Arnold (5) and the rest of her team after making the winning save in a shootout against St. Scholastica in Friday's Divison I semifinal.

Students and other supporters made sure they felt loved on their way out of town Friday morning, just like they did at last Friday’s semifinal win over St. Scholastica. It took penalty kicks to break a 2-2 tie and goalkeeper Maddy Talbot made the clinching save after senior Hope Miletell put Byrd ahead 4-3 on its last kick.

The Lady Jackets beat Fontainebleau 2-0 in the quarterfinals and easily dispatched Pineville in a first-round game, both at home. Their final challenge will be against No. 3 seed Mt. Carmel at Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. Saturday.
