Community School senior running back Joe Lang was not your “average Joe” in leading the Seahawks to a postseason berth Friday night.
Lang rushed for 196 yards and five touchdowns as CSN defeated Southwest Florida Christian Academy 47-18 in the District 2A-7 finale for both sides.
The win clinched a playoff spot as 2A-7 runner-up for Community School (8-2, 5-1), just behind champion First Baptist Academy.
The Seahawks piled up 379 yards of offense in this blowout win, which went to a running clock at the start of the third quarter, as Southwest Florida area football teams wrapped up district play in the next-to-last week of the season.
“We executed well, and we did what we needed to do to win,” said Community coach Paul Selvidio. “We have some mistakes we need to fix, sure, but it was a very good game for us.”
The Seahawks players had a brief playoff-clinching celebration after the game.
“I have to give a ton of credit for our success this season to the assistant coaches,” Selvidio said. “But most of the accolades go to the players. They worked hard and were fun to coach all season.”
Jake Wallace had 106 yards rushing and three scores for the King’s (4-5, 2-4).
“It’s disappointing because we played with so little heart,” said SFCA coach Mike Marciano. “We have to learn to prepare ourselves better and practice better. We didn’t do that and it showed out here.”
SFCA moved the ball well on its second drive, but then coughed it up at about the Seahawks 40-yard line. CSN then went on a 60-yard scoring drive, culminating it with Joe Lang’s 2-yard touchdown run. So Community led 6-0 with 4:36 left in the first.
The Seahawks then recovered a King fumble on the ensuing kickoff and immediately drove for its second touchdown. Lang accounted for much of the yardage on the short drive, and his 14-yard scoring run put CSN ahead 12-0. The Seahawks had two touchdowns in only 1:40.
Lang would score three more times in the second half and Cooper Weiss and Daniel Zuloaga also hooked up for another score. The coup de grace came on Lang’s 27-yard scoring run when the final buzzer sounded before halftime. It was set up by Robert Devito’s interception and 55-yard return. So the Seahawks took a commanding 40-0 lead into the intermission.
SFCA’s three scores came in the final frame when the game was out of reach.
