Late push lifts New Albany to overtime win over Eastern

PEKIN, Ind.— It’s just what both sides expected as New Albany needed a late flurry to turn back pesky Eastern 50-47 Wednesday night in overtime.

“They’re a very good basketball team,” New Albany coach Tammy Geron said of Eastern. “They compete hard, and they’re very well coached. We talked about what a grind it would be, from start to finish. It wasn’t anything we weren’t expecting.”

The Bulldogs (6-1) — off to their best start in five years — trailed 45-42 after Eastern’s Taylor Drury converted a layup with 2:25 left in overtime. Then New Albany junior Julyen Condra hit one of the biggest shots of the game as she drilled a 3-pointer at the top of the key with 1:40 left, tying it at 45-45.

“I’m really proud of her to have the confidence to step up and take that shot in that moment,” Geron said.

The Bulldogs got a lift from senior point guard Marissa Jones, who took a steal the distance for a layup with 1:18 left and then hit 3 of 4 free throws in the last 11 seconds to seal the win. Jones went down in the first quarter and likely will have a black eye on Thanksgiving morning.

“I’m glad I was in that position (at the end of the game),” Jones said. “I always want that.”

“We want the ball in her hands as much as we can,” Geron said of Jones. “She’s our leader. The kids listen to her.”

Savanna Pinkston, who hit all four of her free throws, led New Albany with 14 points. Jones added 13, and Condra had 12. The Musketeers (3-3) got a night from junior Rachel Stewart, who scored 17 of her 24 points after the intermission.

“I’m proud of our effort,” said Eastern coach Mike McBride. “I’m proud of how we competed. We had our chances.

“Rachel (Stewart) — she’s coming on,” McBride said. “Those two (Stewart and Drury) are a great combination. … I think we got better tonight.”

New Albany next will travel to North Harrison on Dec. 1 and then to Bedford North Lawrence Dec. 3.

“We’re going to find out what we’re made out of,” Geron said. “We’ll find out if we’re as good as we think we are.”
