FISHERSVILLE – The rain didn’t dampen the homecoming spirit for Wilson Memorial
The Green Hornets got two touchdowns apiece from Logan Leche and Khalid Turay as they cruised past Stonewall Jackson 51-8 in Shenandoah District football action at Steve Geiman Stadium on Friday.
The difference for the Hornets, who earned their second win of the season, was just being a smater team, said head coach Jeremiah Major.
“We didn’t turn the ball over and have the penalties that we have been having all year long that have been hurting us,” he said.
Wilson quarterback Ty Hevener surprised the Generals on the Hornets’ opening drive, going to the air in the rain on the ninth play of the drive and finding Leche for the first score of the night. Major said saw an opportunity with the Generals playing the run to pull off the play to help “keep them honest.”
After Stonewall fumbled away the ensuing kickoff, Leche, who finished with 130 yards rushing, only needed three plays before scoring his second touchdown of the contest on an 11-yard run.
From there it just unraveled for the Generals as they would fumble on their next drive leading to another Hornet touchdown, this time from Eddie Harris on an 8-yard run. The Wilson defense was aggressive all first half, not allowing a single first down and bottling up Stonewall’s running game.
Turay scored twice on the ground for the Hornets and Colton Tyree sprinted 31 yards to cap off the Hornet scoring spree in the first half.
The Generals finally got on the board at the start of the second half as Logan Ritchie capped a drive with a 2-yard run to make it 45-8. However, the Hornets were quick to answer as sophomore Bryce Norman capped the scoring with a 3-yard TD run.
Wilson can take a couple of days to savor the win before preparing for two very tough opponents ahead in Stuarts Draft and Riverheads.
“We have to have a good week of practice and take care of business,” Major said. “It is like a rivalry for us every week. It’s a fight every week”
