STAUNTON – Missed offensive opportunities has been a season-long problem for the Robert E. Lee football team and that was the case again on Friday night.
The Fighting Leemen failed to take advantage of the few chances they had and fell to Spotswood, 14-0 on Senior night in Staunton.
A holding penalty cost Lee a first quarter touchdown that would have given them an early lead. And in the third quarter, trailing 6-0, another drive stalled deep in Trailblazer territory.
“I’m sorry that we weren’t able to take advantage of those chances to break the game open,” said Lee High head coach Scott Girolmo. “It’s been an unfortunate, continuos story all year. We have those big opportunities and come up a little bit short.”
The defense for the Leemen kept the game competitive. Garrett Lawler and Hurliq Williams each had a first quarter interception.
After netting just one first down on its first three possessions, Spotswood got a big play early in the second. Brady Dodson took a handoff and raced 48 yards up the middle to make it 6-0 with 9:07 left in the first half.
Spotswood had another chance moments later. The Blazers put together a 17-play drive that stalled at the Lee 1, leaving it 6-0.
A Dre Masincup fumble recovery early in the third gave the Leemen another chance. Aided by a 40-yard pass from Jayden Williams to Douglas Simmons, Lee moved the ball inside the Spotswood 5 before the drive ended on downs.
Following an exchange of punts, the Trailblazers put together a 13-play drive to get a big insurance score from Dodson that made it 14-0. The big play in the drive was a 47-yard pass-and-run from Alec High to Aaron Hunter on 3rd-and-35.
Lee would have the ball two more times with good field position. Both times, the Leemen gave it back after failing to convert on fourth down.
“I’m heartbroken for our seniors,” said Girolmo, whose team fell to 3-5 on the season in their final home game. “I think the lesson for us is that no matter what happens and how many mistakes are made, the true joy will come from winning the right way.”
Dodson rushed for 185 yards on 27 carries in the win for Spotswood (6-3).
