STAUNTON – On a rare night of Monday night football in the valley, Robert E. Lee used a power running game and defensive stops when needed to top Broadway 34-21 in Valley District football action at Winston Wine Memorial Stadium.
Devin Williams opened the game by shocking the Gobblers with a 91-yard kickoff return for a score. Lee’s defense looked solid for the first two Broadway drives, forcing punts and chasing Gobbler quarterback Jesse Layne out of the pocket.
“Our pass rush got after him a couple of times,” Lee head coach Scott Girolmo said. “We still need to do a lot of work though.”
Broadway finally put points on the board behind a long drive capped off by Brandon Cruz punching it in from 6. Devin WIlliams had a quick answer as he twisted and sprinted 40 yards on the fourth play of the drive to put the Leemen back in front 14-7, a lead they would take into the half.
The Lee defense started out the second half, forcing a quick three-and-out before putting together a quick five-play drive that featured Jayden Williams and Devin Williams punishing the Gobblers on the ground. Devin Williams sprinted in from 55 yards for his third score of the nightto cap that drive, boosting the lead to 21-7.
“I thought our kids played hard and played together,” Girolmo said. “When your number is called, you’ve got to be able to show up.”
Broadway would get back within seven midway through the third period on an 18-yard TD pass from Layne to Davis Peltonen. The Gobblers went for it on fourth-and-17 in Lee territory on their next possession, and that’s when Lee’s Dee Venable-Chisley would come up with a huge stop, chasing down Layne for a sack.
Two plays later, he would rumble 67 yards to the house, putting the Leeman back up by 14, 28-14, with only 9:00 left.
The Gobblers and Leemen would exchange scores down the stretch, with Lee’s defense coming through when they needed it most improving to 3-3 on the season. Alex Williams capped off the win with an interception of Layne on the final Gobbler drive.
For Lee it will be a short week of prep before they head to Waynesboro on Friday.
“We are going to do the best we can to try and be ready,” Girolmo said. “I think they are really talented and I don’t think you can be ready for their speed.”
