BROADWAY — Stuarts Draft scored early and often en route to a huge 35-7 win over Broadway in a high school football game Friday night.
Senior Dylan Lehmann rushed for 103 yards and scored three touchdowns as the Cougars rolled on a perfect night for high school football.
“Draft had never won here so we just wanted to come off the bus and play,” said Lehmann. “Our offensive line is amazing. They work their butts off in practice and everything goes to them.”
Stuarts Draft marched 64 yards on its opening drive and Lehmann scored on a 7-yard run to opening the scoring and the Cougars were on top 7-0 at 9:55 of first quarter. Moments later, the Cougars’ John Gumann blocked a punt and returned the fumble 38 yards for a score and a 14-0 Stuarts Draft lead.
The Cougars scored three more times in the second quarter, with Lehmann scoring on runs of 9 and 59 yards and Izzy Johnson hauled in a 22-yard touchdown pass from Garrett Campbell and Stuarts Draft led 35-0 at the break. Broadway’s only score of the night came on a 34-yard pass from Jesse Layne to Davis Peltonen in the fourth quarter.
Johnson added 85 yards on seven carries and Xzavier Gunn added 66 yards on six carries for the Cougars’ offense. Defensively, Gumann blocked a punt and Antonio Ruiz-Haynes had two interceptions.
“We executed three phases of the game first half and I am pleased with that,” Stuarts Draft coach Nathan Floyd said. “In the second half we relaxed a little bit and didn’t finish the way I thought we should, but overall I’m pleased. We got a special teams score off a blocked punt and that’s always big in an important game. I’m proud of the guys.”
Stuarts Draft improved to 3-0 and will host East Rockingham next week. Broadway (0-4) will host Fort Defiance for homecoming.
