The unofficial start to the Maurice Belser era for the Lely football program was a success Friday, with the Trojans holding off Pompano Beach-Blanche Ely 33-27 in the spring game.
Rising junior quarterback Jacquez Carter was the star of the game, rushing for 101 yards on 12 carries with two touchdowns. He also threw for 181 yards and a pair of scores.
Belser, who played for the 1992 national champion University of Alabama football team, took over the program after Culmer St. Jean was fired in February.
“We had to fight adversity, both with the rain (early) and on defense at the end of the game,” Belser said. “We fought, didn’t give up. We had a lot of things we can take and learn from in this game.”
The Trojans’ defense struggled with the big play, but hunkered down in the fourth quarter when the Tigers had a chance to go ahead.
