Former Asheville High standout Crezdon Butler was waived by the Detroit Lions on Monday.
Butler appeared in nine games for the NFL team in 2015 and had three tackles. He memorably broke up a two-point conversion pass to give the Lions an 18-16 win over the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field.
The 2006 Cougars graduate has played with seven different NFL teams since Pittsburgh took him in the fifth round of the 2010 NFL draft. He has 24 career tackles and two forced fumbles.
Butler was the 2005 Citizen-Times All-WNC Player of the Year and led the Cougars to a perfect 15-0 season and NCHSAA 3-A championship that fall. It was the first state football title for Asheville since 1922.
He played collegiately for Clemson where Butler made 166 tackles, 11 interceptions and two sacks.
